There aren't many "sandbox" MMOs on the market today. That's a massively multiplayer online game where the player makes their own decisions about where to go and what to do, rather then being led by quests created by the game's designers.

It seems that most people prefer quest-based or level-based games, such as World of Warcraft and its many clones.

But Eve Online is one of the exceptions. It's a sandbox MMO, it's extremely popular with an active server and community, and it's loads of fun.
